Lost something in Nagasaki?

You are already home, but your bag, camera or jacket is still in Nagasaki. Many places in Japan cannot send lost items overseas, and the police usually ask the owner to come in person. We are a small team based in Japan. We search for your item, pick it up with your written permission, and ship it to you.

Nagasaki City area only, for now.

How it works

  1. Tell us what you lost. Where and when you lost it, and what it looks like. Photos help.
  2. We check if we can help. We reply by email. If your case is not a good fit, we say so, and you pay nothing.
  3. You pay the search fee. $30 by PayPal. We then search the places listed below, in Japanese, by phone and in person.
  4. We report back. If we find it, you sign a simple letter of permission so we can pick it up for you.
  5. We pick it up and ship it. You pay the recovery fee and the actual shipping cost. We send it by Japan Post with tracking, and send you the tracking number.

Where we search

Police

Items found in Nagasaki are usually handed to the police within a few days. The police keep them for 3 months. We check the official lost-and-found records and contact the police station.

Trams, buses and trains

Nagasaki trams (streetcars), Nagasaki Bus and other local buses, and JR Nagasaki Station.

Airport, cruise terminal and hotels

Nagasaki Airport, the Matsugae International Cruise Terminal, and the hotel, shop or restaurant you visited.

Please contact your airline or cruise line too, for items left on the plane or ship. We can help you write to them.

Price

1. Search fee

$30

Paid before we start. We search all the places that fit your story, and send you a report of who we contacted and what they said.

Not refunded if the item is not found. The fee pays for our time searching. We will tell you honestly at the start if we think the chance is low.

2. Recovery fee (only if found)

$55

We go to the police station or office, pick up your item with your permission letter, pack it carefully and take it to the post office.

3. Shipping (actual cost)

At cost

Japan Post (EMS or international parcel) with tracking. We tell you the exact price before we ship. No markup.

Other costs we cannot control: under Japanese law, the person who found your item may ask for a reward of 5% to 20% of its value. If this happens we will tell you before pickup, and you decide. Import taxes in your country are paid by you on delivery.

Questions

What if you don't find it?

You get a report of every place we checked. The $30 search fee is not refunded, but you pay nothing more. If the item turns up later (within the 3-month police holding period) and the police contact you, we can still pick it up for the recovery fee.

Is this legal?

Yes. Japanese police allow an owner to send a person with a written letter of permission (power of attorney) to receive a lost item. We follow the rules of each police station and office.

What can't you ship?

Some things cannot go by international mail, such as cash, loose batteries, lighters, sprays and some liquids. Passports are handled by the police and your embassy, so we do not collect them. For lost credit cards or phones, please cancel or lock them first. We check the shipping rules for your item before you pay the recovery fee.

Who are you?

En Studio Japan is run by one person living in Japan, with help from an AI assistant for English writing. A real person does every search, pickup and shipment. About us.

How long does it take?

A search usually takes 2 to 5 working days, because offices and police stations are closed on weekends and holidays. Shipping by EMS usually takes 3 to 10 days.
